Donegal Donkey Sanctuary
Who are we?
Donegal Donkey Sanctuary has been in operation for seven years and came about as a result of a severe need to provide safety, food and shelter to a large number of donkeys in need.
Find out who we are and what we do
Husband and wife team Sandra & Danny Curran took in their first donkey as a result of a phone call from a family friend who found a starving & dehydrated donkey tied to a scrapped car in a bog. As time went by several more donkeys found their way into their care and the couple became known for their empathy and kindness towards these gentle beasts. By the time numbers had risen into the low twenties a decision was reached to become a more formal and organised entity so Donegal Donkey Sanctuary was born!
Public support has been tremendous and many wonderful people have volunteered their help in many ways. The sanctuary has gone from strength to strength over the last few years with the addition of a new stable block, large barn, tea room and gift shop funded by the Leader Programme/Donegal Local Development Company.
Animals come to the sanctuary in a variety of ways. Some are cruelty cases who have never known a kind word and have endured years of abuse and neglect. Others come from loving homes that can no longer care for them for a variety of reasons. Sometimes advancing age makes it impossible for an owner to manage the donkeys or maybe a family has seen a marked change in financial circumstances and can no longer afford to keep their old friend. Every case is individual and every donkey is given a name or retains it’s given name if known.
What People Say
I really enjoy a day trip to Donegal Donkey Sanctuary. The setting is so calm & peaceful & the views are stunning on a clear day. It is a haven for animals & people alike & I just love to spend time with all the beautiful animals. I always leave feeling happier! Thanks to all of you for your dedicated work.
Happy to be part of it all!
I have been volunteering at the sanctuary for about four years & absolutely love it! It is the best part of my week! I have made lots of like minded new friends & met some gorgeous donkeys that have a special place in my heart. Only trouble is, I want to take them all home!

I cannot praise the sanctuary enough. It is a wonderful organisation with such truly caring people. My husband & I visit the county several times a year on family visits & it is the highlight of our trip. Really loving the new gift shop/tearoom!

My family really enjoyed this years Open Day back in June. We first visited about five years ago & are so delighted to see how much the sanctuary has grown & flourished. Our favourite has to be our adoption donkey ‘Binky’! It has great to finally get to meet him!
